I sat down at my desk as the sun was shifting, and when I finally looked up, the world had moved on by ten hours. My back didn't ache, my mind wasn't tired, and the clock seemed like it was lying. The time has stopped for hours.
As a hypnotherapy student, you learn about "Time Distortion" in textbooks. But when you live it—when you are in The Zone—you realize it isn't just a side effect of trance. It is the signature of the subconscious taking the wheel. As we call it in hypnotherapy - the Critical Faculty - the filter which is allowing things drop into the subconscious is still sleeping at 4 AM.
The Science of the "No-Clock" Zone
In our daily lives, we operate in Beta—a state of high-alert, logical, and linear time-keeping. We are constantly checking the "external clock." But when we drop into the Alpha or Theta states (the states we guide our clients into), we activate a fascinating cognitive ability called Chronesthesia, or mental time travel.
In this state, the brain stops monitoring "Chronos" (sequential, ticking time) and starts living in "Kairos" (the opportune moment of meaning).
Why the Subconscious Ignores the Clock
When the subconscious mind is fully engaged in a creative task—like writing a script or editing a book—it prioritizes meaning over measurement.
The "Busy" Mind: Asks "How much longer until I'm done?"
The "Trance" Mind: Asks "What is the next layer of truth I can find?"
For a therapist, understanding this is vital. When a client comes out of a 45-minute session and asks, "Was I only under for five minutes?", they aren't just relaxed. They have successfully shifted their processing to a deeper level where the "inner critic" (the time-keeper) has finally fallen asleep.
The Nomad’s Anchor
I call this state Pure Presence. It is the "Nomad’s Anchor"—even when your mind is traveling through ideas, worlds, and chapters, you are anchored so deeply in the now that the outside world ceases to pull at you.
Yesterday, I used that anchor to perfect my book’s formatting—fonts, margins, and all. The work wasn't a "chore" because, in the Zone, there is no such thing as "effort." There is only flow. Again as when I write - I have stopped the time. Am I a God or what? ;-)
